Leading e-wallet EcoCard Ltd has announced its exit from the US market after months of speculation and conflicting information.
In an e-mailed notice, EcoCard referred to the continued impact of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in the United States as the reason for its exit and confirmed that it is to exit the American market on August 24.
The e-mail was directed at US customers and announced that, in the light of recent industry developments, EcoCard had decided that it will no longer process any payment transactions originating from American customers that may be related to online gambling.
However, EcoCard stated that the accounts of US customers will not be closed or suspended and American players will still be able to withdraw funds after August 24. In addition, US-located customers will be able to continue to use their EcoCard account at non-Internet gambling supported merchants, to make person-to-person money transfers and for withdrawals.
Finally, it stated that deposits from US customers would be accepted before August 24 and that customers located in countries other than the United States would not be affected by the change in its policy with all transactions for these customers continuing without disruption.
